Installing the operating system

The software requires a server with Fedora, which is a free open source Linux operating system. Our instructions take you through exactly how to do this, and the information that you will need to know before you begin. Alternatively, you can use the Red Hat Enterprise operating system (we do not provide instructions for this).

Once you have the operating system, you will need to install the Cheshire software required to run your Spoke:

When you install the software, you will be installing:

• The Cheshire software. (You can find out more about Cheshire on the Cheshire3 website.)
• The Cheshire for Archives software, which is the search engine for the Archives Hub.

We strongly recommend that archivists have IT support during the set-up procedure, as it does require technical know-how.

• We have a Spokes email list for you to post comments and suggestions to. You can find this at http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/archives-hub-spokes.html.
• A Spokes Users' and Developers' Group meets periodically to discuss progress and developments. All Spokes and potential Spokes institutions are welcome to attend. We will announce meetings via the Spokes email list.
